I think that by now nearly everybody has clued in that our April Fool's artpack collection was nowt but one bad joke (a change of pace from our typical modus operandi of a plethora of tiny cruel jokes). Also this past month we ran this year's Blender competition which went off like a house on fire! Now here we are, nearly midway through the year, with (yet) another themed collection: we'd long since set aside a run of Horsenburger "Last Jedi" teletext pieces for the month of May (specifically, for "May the 4th be with you" celebrations) and decided to double down on the theme, making this month's artpack one big riot of science fiction, with a subset of the works focusing on Star Wars specifically. (If you peruse the artpack contents alphabetically, you will see the SW materials first, prefixed with an exclamation point.) Every artpack has got some kind of milestone; this one actually has many. Not only does this collection mark the first artpack appearance of Carl Dizon, but I'll warrant it's the first time pixelart made in the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet has been shared with the digital underground ever! MS Office: Not Very Underground. (Oldschool, maybe, but it still doesn't hold a candle to Lotus Symphony, Borland Office, or Spinnaker's venerable 8-in-1. But I digress.) Another suspected first this time is the introduction of someone we'll call Lego Colin, who eschews perler beads in favour of making physical pixelart using, you guessed it, LEGO blocks. We're all just points on the LEGO-Minecraft spectrum, ultimately. Also making their artscene debuts in this collection are our latest round of Instagram pixelart draft prospects: Mentalpop, Ordinary_Pixel, and Stephan Bellin, whose works speak volumes for themselves. The former and latter of the three put in the hours sharpening their pixelart chops for game development contexts, while Ordinary_Pixel is most likely to try their hand at conversions of paintings by old masters. (Not this month, though!) The glitch maestro 192.168.10.13 technically made their first appearance last month in the April Fool's pack (you may recall the exceedingly happy glitched dog), but having escaped appearing beneath their real alias and mention in an infofile, we felt it was worthwhile to single them out for recognition here and now! Cranksy also emerged from retirement last month after many long years snoozing in the Mistigris Facebook group, and you can hear him jamming out this time around in Darth Vader's basement rumpus room. ANSI art champion The Knight of Fuel makes a guest appearance here, giving everyone cause for celebration by ending Cthulu's spree of five consecutive FILE_ID.DIZ ASCII art illustrations, denying Nail credit for ending the reign of terror. Big data reports (yes, all that talk about spreadsheets isn't just talk!) that this isn't his first time winding up in a Mistigris artpack, but as his only prior logged appearance was 21 years ago in our 3rd anniversary extravaganza, you might be forgiven for not immediately remembering. (I suspect it was an indirect appearance via a remix of one of his ANSIs by Fire From Heaven, but you may want to just take my word for it.) The structure of this infofile is like MS-DOS application progress bars: a first, a first, a first, for the first time, the end! But before we go, we've got to make our official endorsement for Overflow #003, the latest local music night by the Vancouver Chipmusic Society -- featuring TRASH80, GRAZ, PONGBALL, SKYBOX, BASE64 and CHRIS SHIER, if you don't have other plans the night of May 30th, you need to get down to the Fox Cabaret and hear just how loud a Game Boy can get. OK, that's really it -- enjoy the artpack and we'll see you in June! SAUCE00MIST0518 infofile Cthulu / the Knight Mistigris / Fuel 20180418{!PZIBM VGA
