-the phunk tutorial-------------------------------------------------------°°°-- this is meant to be a tutorial for the more advanced ansi-artist. if you are new in business, check out 14.zip aka 14 steps to worlddomination by hennifer / lazarus. no long introduction, this tutorial deals mostly with colorcombinations, you should be able to handle the shaping already =) and a VERY important note: never try to use too much new things. first use the basic shading until it's perfect and then move on the next step. that's it. ah well, you have to cope with my english, too. =) most ansi-artists use a very small amount of the available colors. newer artists often only use shadingscales like cyan-bright cyan-white etc. ÛÛ ²² ÛÛ ²²they sure look good, but after you've seen dozens of logos ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛwith this simple shading, they get extremely boring =) ²² ²² ²² ²² °° °° °° °° ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ the first possibility to enhance the shading is called pnakotic - after the ice-logo artist (releasing in 94 or something) who invented this :) there are several kinds of pnakotic shading. 1. the f2 method you got a dark area of a certain colour and put a f2-block (±/alt-177) some- where on it. ÛÛÛ± <- f2 ÛÛÛ± <- f2 ÛÛÛ± <- f2 ÛÛÛ± <- f2 ÛÛÛ± <- f2 ÛÛÛ± <- f2 ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ as you might have noticed, some combinations don't look too good - like blue, red and brown. just putting a f2block somewhere in the middle of an empty area usually does not look too good, either. ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ±±Û ßßßßßßß 2. the fading-out method pnakotic is a cool way of fading out into black. °°<-f1°° ÛÛÛÛÛ±±<-f2 ÛÛÛÛ±± ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ<-f4 ÛÛÛ±²² 3. you can use some pnakotic f3-block in a normal shading scale to add some "diffusion". ÛÛ°°Û you usually do not recognize at the first sight, but it adds some ÛÛ°°Û detail into the ansi, especially if you use it several times (but ÛÛ²²° never overdo it - like i use to do from time to time =) ÛÛ Û this works with a couple of colours like yellow and brown, cyan, ÛÛ°°Û red etc. ÛÛ²²° sometimes that little contrast is too strong. then you can smooth ÛÛÛÛÛ it with one grey ° block on the bg-colour. ÛÛ°°Û ÛÛ²²° 4. extended pnakotic in the last time i used to some kind of extended pnakotic. have a look: (appeared in bmbook 16) k o l O r .. ° Þ °Û ÜÜ ÜÜÜÜ ß ÞÛÛÛ ÜÜÜÜ Üܰ °ß ÜÜ ÜÝ ÜÜÜÜÞÛÛÛÛ ßÝ ÞÛÛÛÛßßÛÛÛÛÛ° ßÜÜÜÜÜÞ ÛÛÛÜÜÜ ßß ÛÛÛÛÛÛ °² ß° ßßÛÛܲÛÛÛ²° ²±²ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜÜ °² ²²ÛÛÛ² ÜÜܱ±Ý ß Û °°²²²²²²²° °° °²²²ßßßÛÛÛ²²²ÛÛÛÛݰ °² ±²²²²²°Üܱ±°°°°²²° ÜÜÜÛß ÜÜß²²²°Û ÜܰÜß ßÜܰ²²²² ßßÜß²²²²²²²²° °² ß²²²²ܲ±°°°±±ßßßß ÛÛÛß °²²²Ü ܲ²°°°Ûܰ°²²²Ü ܲ°Ü°°° °ß °Þ°°°²²²²Û °² °°°²°°°°ß Üܲ² ²°°°°°°°°°ßßÛÛÛÛÛßÛݲ°±±°°°ßÛÛÛÛÛß°°²²² ß °Üܲ²²°°°ß °ß ±±²²²°° Ý ß Û²²²Üܰ°±²²ÛÛÛ°°°Ûß ²²ßß°°°ÛÛ°°°°°Ûß²²²ÜÜܲ²²²ßßß ° °²°²²²²°°°°ÛÜܰ°°°²²²Þ²²²²²°°°ß°²²°ßß °°Üßß²²°²²Ûßß ÞÛ°°²²²ÛÛ²²²Ü °° ² Üܰ°°Ýßß°°±±²²²²°°°²Û²²²²²²² ÜÜܰ°° °° °°°ßßßÜܰ°ßßÛÛ°°Ý ÞÝ ° ° ßß²²ÛÝ ßßßß±±°²²²Û² Þßß° ÞÜ ßßßßßß ÜÜ ßß Þ°°°°ÛÝ ° ÜÜ ²² °²° ßßßß ÜÜ ß ÜÜ ß °Þ°²²²Ý ° ßÝ Ü ° Þ²²ßßßß °°° _avebm ²²²²² let's take this part for example. as you can see i (almost) always ²²²²Ü chose black as background colour for the bright colours (pink/white/ °°°² yellow). ±²²²° i smoothed those hard contrasts with ²²° ²²²²° some f1-block of the same or of a darker|^ ° on Û colour| `- ² on black "bright squares" dieznyik once released a tutorial about transparency. halaster/fire often uses this, too. it works fine with grey/white, cyan/bright cyan .. but also with some quite odd combinations. examples: ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛjust try it yourself. ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ of course you do not have to choose always squares. it works well with every- thing.
