THE LAND OF NEVER BEFORE The Adventures of LUCKY, The Lavender Llama PART 1 Mama had told him to wear his mittens and ear muffs but the big boys were laughing, they called them "kid stuff" So he slipped 'round the corner and took them right off and headed on to school to face no more scoff And now he lay quietly in his own little bed His temperature rising, his face hot and red He thought he could hear Mama talking to him but he was so tired and he felt hot and grim He tried to answer but his throat was so sore and then a strange voice said "Let's go to Never Before" Feeling quite well, he sat up to see a lavender llama who was as big as a tree He wore a shiny coat of pale lavender and a top hat with green and bright purple fur His eyes were the color of the sky at midnight and though he should be scared, little Bobby felt no fright For the llama was friendly with a happy wide smile and said "Come with me, for just a little while" We'll go to the Land of Never Before and see what adventures lay there in store Just jump on my back and we'll fly through the air, it'll take just a moment for us to get there" Little Bobby said "Oh, but what is your name? for I don't talk to strangers or join in their games." "But I'm not a stranger, I was sent here to you to make you feel better when you're feeling so blue My name is Lucky" the llama then said and Bobby was quickly out of his bed On Lucky's soft back, through the clouds they did fly and as they touched down Bobby let out a sigh For the sight that he saw was a vast wonderland and with Lucky the llama his adventure began on streets paved in chocolate, with trees of gum drops and on every street corner there were great big toy shops filled with firetrucks and freight trains and shiny bikes too and Lucky said to Bobby, "What do you want to do? " "Well, I'm kinda hungry, could I have a sandwich, please? with crunchy peanut butter and a big slice of cheese?" So they entered a deli and came out quite content and Bobby spied an elm tree by a big circus tent "May we go to the circus and then maybe see if I can climb to the top of that big old elm tree?" They sat in the front row as elephants danced with a flair and watched beautiful ladies fly through the air Bobby jumped back, surprised, at the lion's great roar and laughed as trained doggies rolled on the floor They saw daring young men walk the tightrope and a clown on one wheel, trying to cope They laughed at his antics, and watched him speed by And Bobby said to Lucky "Now I'd like to try to climb that big elm, and then maybe go home for I'm getting tired and I've been gone much too long" Lucky smiled then at him and said "That's OK, You can conquer the tree and we'll be on our way" Bobby climbed all the way to the very tip top and grinned down at Lucky when he finally stopped He sat there a moment looking around at the sights Then he hopped on Lucky's back and they took off in flight Lucky said to Bobby, as they flew through the air "Never be scared, for I'll always be there, When you are lonely, or are feeling real bad when the clouds are all gray, or you friends make you mad Just close your eyes, you need do no more, and I'll come take you to Never Before" Bobby settled down for a quick little nap and when he woke up, he was in Mama's lap Safe and secure, and feeling quite well He smiled up at Mama with a story to tell PART TWO He was her most favorite playmate in all the whole world but he thought her a baby, and he called her a girl She'd heard Bobby's story, but she wasn't quite sure if he was just teasing or if his thoughts were pure Of this she was thinking as she lay there so still and the sandman came calling, against her strong will And as she lay sleeping, her blonde curls across her face she heard a strange voice, that she just couldn't place She sat up in bed, her blue eyes growing wide As she noticed the llama, right by her bedside And just as Bobby said, he wore a real fuzzy hat and a lavender coat, just imagine that! "Hi, dear Katrina, I'm 'Lucky' as you know. and if you would like, to Never Before we can go" "Oh yes, Lucky, please, may we go there right now? I've been wanting to go, but I didn't know how. " "Well, just grab your pink robe and hop on my back, it'll take just a moment and you don't have to pack" So with her arms around his neck and a smile on her face she settled down for the ride to a magical place When they arrived, she squealed in delight for it was just as he'd said. Her friend, Bobby, was right She skipped along side Lucky on the chocolate street and at each plate glass window, she'd stop for a peek At the dollies, the tea sets, the story books too When suddenly Lucky said "Oh, she looks just like you!" And there on the shelf, right before her bright eyes was a miniature Katrina, and she laughed in surprise When they went in the store the clerk said, "Hello, little miss, this dolly's for you, all she needs is a kiss" Katrina gave her a kiss and made sure Lucky did too and they went back outside, where the sky was so blue As they walked across the street, Katrina jumped in surprise for they were suddenly surrounded by huge butterflies There were blue ones and green ones and yellow ones as well and with a butterfly on each shoulder they came to a big carousel Holding tightly to dolly, she chose the finest pony there and with a little help from Lucky, she rode with a flair The butterflies fluttered as music filled the day When she finished, she said to Lucky, "We must be on our way, Mommy will miss me and my Daddy will too" So on Lucky's soft back, as she and dolly flew Katrina said "Oh, Lucky, I've had a really great time, I love you, Lucky, and this dolly of mine. Now if only Bobby wouldn't call me names and maybe let me join in on some of his games" Lucky said to Katrina, "Oh, there'll come a day when he changes his mind and his attention will sway. So you really don't need to worry or fret and until that day comes, don't ever forget that when you are lonely, unhappy or bored, we can always take a trip to Never Before" After only a moment, her eyes grew heavy it seemed and she suddenly woke up, as if from a dream in her own little room, in her own little bed as Daddy came in and said "Wake up, Sleepyhead!" She smiled up a Daddy and he gave her a kiss and he said, "Oh, Katrina, now just what is this?" and there right beside her in the covers so deep lay her little dolly, still fast asleep
