LUCKY, The Lavender Llama Mama had told him to wear his mittens and ear muffs but the big boys were laughing, they called them "kid stuff" So he slipped 'round the corner and took them right off and headed on to school to face no more scoff And now he lay quietly in his own little bed His temperature rising, his face hot and red He thought he could hear Mama talking to him but he was so tired and he felt hot and grim He tried to answer but his throat was so sore and then a strange voice said "Let's go to Never Before" Feeling quite well, he sat up to see a lavender llama who was as big as a tree He wore a shiny coat of pale lavender and a top hat with green and bright purple fur His eyes were the color of the sky at midnight and though he should be scared, little Bobby felt no fright For the llama was friendly with a happy wide smile and said "Come with me, for just a little while" We'll go to the Land of Never Before and see what adventures lay there in store Just jump on my back and we'll fly through the air, it'll take just a moment for us to get there" Little Bobby said "Oh, but what is your name ? for I don't talk to strangers or join in their games." "But I'm not a stranger, I was sent here to you to make you feel better when you're feeling so blue My name is Lucky" the llama then said and Bobby was quickly out of his bed On Lucky's soft back, through the clouds they did fly and as they touched down Bobby let out a sigh For the sight that he saw was a vast wonderland and with Lucky the llama his adventure began on streets paved in chocolate, with trees of gum drops and on every street corner there were great big toy shops filled with firetrucks and freight trains and shiny bikes too and Lucky said to Bobby, "What do you want to do ? " "Well, I'm kinda hungry, could I have a sandwich, please? with crunchy peanut butter and a big slice of cheese?" So they entered a deli and came out quite content and Bobby spied an elm tree by a big circus tent "May we go to the circus and then maybe see if I can climb to the top of that big old elm tree?" They sat in the front row as elephants danced with a flair and watched beautiful ladies fly through the air Bobby jumped back, surprised, at the lion's great roar and laughed as trained doggies rolled on the floor They saw daring young men walk the tightrope and a clown on one wheel, trying to cope They laughed at his antics, and watched him speed by And Bobby said to Lucky "Now I'd like to try to climb that big elm, and then maybe go home for I'm getting tired and I've been gone much too long" Lucky smiled then at him and said "That's OK, You can conquer the tree and we'll be on our way" Bobby climbed all the way to the very tip top and grinned down at Lucky when he finally stopped He sat there a moment looking around at the sights Then he hopped on Lucky's back and they took off in flight Lucky said to Bobby, as they flew through the air "Never be scared, for I'll always be there, When you are lonely, or are feeling real bad when the clouds are all gray, or you friends make you mad Just close your eyes, you need do no more, and I'll come take you to Never Before" Bobby settled down for a quick little nap and when he woke up, he was in Mama's lap Safe and secure, and feeling quite well He smiled up at Mama with a story to tell
