Jarabel froze. The slow sound of a key being inserted into the lock of the door
brought everything home. He had no place to hide in the dimly lit chamber. No
window to jump to freedom from. He, the top thief in all of Waterdeep was about
be caught red handed in the vaults of the city guard. And there was nothing he
could do about it, except perhaps kill the guard quickly before he could raise
the alarm. There was no time to think, and even less. The guard opened the door
and looked straight at Jarabel.

"Hold it right there thief!" exclaimed the guard as he drew his long sword.

"Ummm.. look.. this isn't what is seems." Jarabel began his routine.

"And I'm one of the ruling council. Okay, slowly draw that blade and toss it
onto the floor." the gaurd replied.

Jarabel complied, throwing his dirk at the foot of the guard. Slowly, keeping
a steady eye on his opponent the guard knelt to pick up the weapon. Then as
he placed the dirk into an empty sheath in his boot the gaurd order Jarabel
up against the wall and slowly padded him down.

"Foolish thief," the guard began,"sneaking into the city guard-house with a
single daggar. I'ld expect more from a rogue these days.."

Jarabel spun and sank his fingers into the guard's eyes. Blood drained down
the guard's face as he let out a low groan of agony. Jarabel smiled, his
cainine teeth enlarging at the site of blood. Muscles snapped and popped as
they grew. His ears extended and his eyes turned to the color of blood. He
sank his face into the guard's chest and devoured his right arm. Finishing
his meal he gazed down at the ravenged body and smiled wickedly.

The guard would not be found for several hours. Upon examining the horrid
scene they found a single sentence written on the wall in blood...

"Never under estimate your opponent, especially in the city of Waterdeep."
