[?7hThe Day To Remember úúúúþþþþþþþþþþþúúúú As the sub approached its destination I rose and grabbed a pole. While the metro halted quickly, I promptly left the train. I positioned myself on the escalator, As it pulled me up from the underground. My building was insight, only 70 yards away. It was raining and I was in a hurry. Then, while I was walking, a voice squealed out. I looked around and saw no one. No one except for a thin man, Graying and balding in the head. He just sat there with his legs outstretched. Getting soaked by the falling rain, With a guitar to one side of him, And an empty alcohol bottle on the other side. He opened his mouth, as if to beckon again, Showing his yellow and decaying teeth. But he did not speak, he only looked with pleading eyes. Eyes that looked unporportioned with his guant face. Then it happened. He held out a cup, an old 7-11 coffee cup. Filling with water in the drenching rain. And he still did not speak. Only looked. As he shook his cup and pointed into it. At first I was aggravated and angry. How could he beg for MY money? How could he do that? I earned my money. He and his dirty clothes and body begging ME. He didn't even have the nerve to ask directly. He just sat there shaking his cup, And begging with unrelentlous eyes. With a booze bottle and a guitar next to him. I shifted my briefcase into my other hand. And fixed the hair out of my eyes with my fingers. I had been staring at him, and he at me, for What seemed like ages. In the rain. And then I understood. I don't know why and how, exactly, Why it happened at that moment; but it did. I understood his heartache, and his shame. His shamefullness to great to ask for money. I understood completely. The way he must feel -- deserted, alone, and pathetic. No one to love and no one to be loved from. And then I reached into my pocket: And pulled out three nickles and dropped them in the cup. I proudly walked away believing I was a good samartian.
