I never liked being this far from the security of my home, but it was essential to keep in touch with my friends, and I hadn't heard from them for weeks. I was doing about 45MPH on my snowmobile in the sharp winter air. By the time I reached the old city, I could feel the sweat running down my skin. I stopped at the city gates, noticing something odd. There were no guards, and there were always guards at the gates. Figuring it would be better to get off the sled and walk, I started towards the center of the city. Everything was quiet, no children played, the streets were unplowed. Total silence, and nothing moved other than the light winter snow. My progress was slow, but eventually I came to the town square. As I approached the center, I heard a crisp crack under my foot, which broke the still winter air. Digging in the snow, I found a young child's skeleton. This is crazy, I thought to myself. The more I dug, the more skeletons I found. No trace of flesh on any of them, and predators couldn't have gotten at them this far under the snow. What the hell was going on? After a couple more minutes of digging up nothing but bones, I found a small book with scribbled writing on its worn pages. Quickly flipping to the last page of this nameless skeleton's book, I was able to read his last entry.. ".. They keep telling us nothing is wrong, but why can't we use the phones, send mail, or leave the city? The rumor of the government project grows with each day, some now calling it the Nuclear Winter. All I know for sure is I will take this testament to my grave, and I pray for the soul of anyone who comes to read this." Dreadnought [CHAOS] '93
